Other exotic wildlife.

In 1967 I was posted to teach in Uganda. One of the first thing I did was buy a Canon FX SLR camera. In those days photography had nothing whatsoever to do with telephones! We used something called "film" which, in due course - usually a week or so - could be turned into negatives for prints, or slides for projection.

Many of the images below had such an origin. To appear below they have been processed and manipulated many times. Too many times, with some loss of quality. The original slides still look good projected on a decent screen though.

We were driving across open country in north eastern Uganda when we came across this elephant and her baby. Elephants do not see too well but she knew we were there and showed signs of agitation. We put the Land Rover into reverse and backed away...

The classic trip in Murchison Falls National Park is the cruise up the Nile to the falls. This enabled us to get amazingly close to some enormous crocodiles, in what quickly came to feel like a remarkably flimsy boat.

Thomson  gazelle....

...possibly of interest to this lioness.

I always knew Monty had a bit of lion in him...

This is a chameleon and yes, they do actually change colour depending on the background. They move very slowly. This one is in the act of running away.

The only fast part of a chameleon is its tongue when it catches a fly. I am not sure how I managed this shot!

Three lions relaxing somewhere in the wilds of Kidepo National park.

Another lion in Amsterdam Zoo. I do not much like going to zoos because, it seems to me, many of the animals are in distress. If you meet an animal in the wild, they may not be happy to see you, or you may frighten them, but they will look at you and meet your eye. In a zoo they almost always will not.

A pride of lions relaxing after a kill.

Zebra.

Giraffe.

The same animals in Amsterdam Zoo, but without space to move around...

This is a kite that repeatedly dive bombed us during a roadside picnic in Ethiopia. Here it is making off with the filling from a corned beef sandwich. It was not interested in the bread...

Another shot from Amsterdam Zoo, with animals refusing to look at the customers.

Meercat.

A bizarre sight in a Cornish village...

In Amsterdam Zoo...
